The American Express “black” card, also referred to as the Centurion card, is a premium credit card unlike any other. Its so prestigious that you have to be invited to use it, and only big spenders are eligible. It makes sense that the card has become a source of fascination for those of us who haven’t been selected to apply, given that a number of celebrities are also known to carry it.
Many people have been enthralled with the American Express Centurion Black Card due to its aura of exclusivity and mystery. This storied card, which represents the pinnacle of wealth and status, is not suitable for everyone. So, who exactly gets the Amex Black Card?.
The Elusive Invitation: A Glimpse into the Centurion Club
Unlike other credit cards, the Centurion Black Card cannot be obtained through a simple application. It’s an invitation-only club, reserved for a select few who meet stringent criteria. While the exact selection process remains shrouded in secrecy, here’s what we know about the elusive requirements:
1 A History of Excellence with American Express:
To be considered for the Centurion Black Card, you must have a proven track record with American Express. This typically means being a cardholder for at least a year and demonstrating responsible credit card usage.
2. The Big Spender Status:
When it comes to spending, the Amex Black Card is not for the timid. According to reports, you must spend at least $500,000 on your American Express cards each year. Some people even assert that the annual threshold is closer to one million dollars.
3. An Impeccable Credit Score:
A stellar credit score is a must for Centurion Black Card membership. You’ll need a score of 800 or higher to be considered, indicating a history of responsible financial management.
4. Beyond the Numbers: The Intangible Factors:
While the above criteria are essential, they are not the sole determinants of Centurion Black Card membership. American Express also considers intangible factors such as your net worth, professional achievements, and overall financial profile.
5. The Mysterious Invitation:
If you meet the criteria, you might receive an invitation to join the Centurion Club. However, there’s no guarantee. American Express remains tight-lipped about the exact process, adding to the mystique of the Black Card.

Amex black card requirements
You must obtain a private invitation from American Express; you cannot simply apply and hope to be accepted.
Rumor has it that you need to be a high earner who has spent and paid off between $350,000 and $500,000 across all of your American Express accounts in a calendar year in order to be invited for the Black Card, even though the requirements aren’t officially released.
And once youre approved for the card, theres a $10,000 initiation fee, and a $5,000 annual fee. It appears incredibly reasonable when compared to high-end credit cards like the Amex Platinum Card ($695 yearly fee) and the Amex Business Platinum Card ($695).
Benefits of the Amex Centurion black card
The Amex Centurion card is more than just a status symbol; it comes with a ton of amazing benefits, some of which are exclusive to it, like free Delta elite status.
Marriott, Hilton, Intercontinental Hotels Group, and Relais are the four main hotel chains where you can guarantee hotel elite status with a black card. Having hotel elite status entitles you to wonderful perks like complimentary breakfast, late checkouts, resort and spa credits, and upgraded rooms.
Status with Hilton and Marriott** is available with the Amex Platinum Card and Amex Business Platinum Card, but not with IHG and Relais.
According to The Points Guy, the black card also offers cardholders Platinum Medallion elite status with Delta. It gives you benefits like free upgrades and bonus miles that you cannot get with any other credit card.
When traveling, there’s nothing more convenient than knowing you have access to a cozy airport lounge, especially if you have a lengthy layover. More than 1,400 airport lounges worldwide are free to enter with an Amex Black Card, including Priority Pass airport lounges, Delta Sky Clubs when traveling on an airline, and Amex Centurion Lounges. You can sit back and relax on the comfortable chairs while indulging in some good food and drinks.
As a Centurion cardholder, you have virtually the same access to airport lounges as you do with the Amex Platinum Card and Amex Business Platinum Card.
Late in2019, Amex announced that it would be increasing the annual fee for the Centurion card, along with the addition of several new benefits. Equinox Destination Access Membership, which enables Centurion cardholders to use any of the more than 100 Equinox gym locations in the US, UK, and Canada, is one of the most valuable new benefits. If you’re a fan of the upscale fitness club chain, this membership is highly valuable, costing $300 per month plus a $500 initiation fee.
Unsurprisingly, theres no comparable benefit on the Amex Platinum Card and Amex Business Platinum Card cards**.
