There are two different types of payday loans in Illinois:

  • Payday loans must be paid back in two to four weeks and have annual percentage rates (APR) as high as 400%.
  • Payday installment loans have longer terms that can last up to six months and APRs as high as 400%.
  • You may not owe more than $1,000 in total payments for the first calendar month of a single payday loan in Chicago. If you have multiple payday loans, your combined payments cannot be greater than $1,000 or 25% of your gross monthly income, whichever is less. If you have multiple installment payday loans or a mix of payday loans and installment payday loans, your total payments cannot be more than $1,000 or 22 per month, whichever is less. 5% of your gross monthly income.

    In general, payday lenders can’t charge more than $15. 50 per $100 borrowed. You receive a written agreement outlining your payment obligations as part of a payday loan. You are permitted to enter into a repayment plan that gives you at least 55 days to repay the loan in installments without incurring any additional fees if you take out a payday loan and are still in debt after 35 days.
