Generally speaking, Social Security benefits are paid on the third, second, third, and fourth Wednesdays of each month. Generally, the date of your birth determines the specific Social Security payment date. The first of every month is when payments for Supplemental Security Income (SSI) are made.
Your payment date is determined by the primary beneficiary’s birthday rather than your own if you receive benefits based on someone else’s work record (spousal benefits, for instance, or survivors benefits).
The answer is it depends. While Social Security benefits are typically paid on the 2nd, 3rd, or 4th Wednesday of the month, depending on your birthdate, there are exceptions.
Here’s a breakdown of the payment schedule:
- Birthdate on the 1st – 10th: You’ll receive your benefit on the second Wednesday of the month.
- Birthdate on the 11th – 20th: You’ll receive your benefit on the third Wednesday of the month.
- Birthdate on the 21st – 31st: You’ll receive your benefit on the fourth Wednesday of the month.
However, there are two exceptions:
- If you received Social Security before May 1997: You’ll receive your benefit on the 3rd of the month, regardless of your birthdate.
- If you receive both Social Security and Supplemental Security Income (SSI): You’ll receive your Social Security benefit on the 3rd of the month and your SSI benefit on the 1st of the month.
Here’s a table summarizing the payment schedule:
Birthdate | Payment Day | Exception |
---|---|---|
1st – 10th | Second Wednesday | None |
11th – 20th | Third Wednesday | None |
21st – 31st | Fourth Wednesday | None |
Before May 1997 | 3rd of the month | N/A |
Receiving both Social Security and SSI | 3rd of the month (Social Security), 1st of the month (SSI) | N/A |
Therefore, if your birthdate is on the 1st – 10th, or if you received Social Security before May 1997, your Social Security check will not come out on the 3rd.
Here are some additional things to keep in mind:
- The payment schedule is based on the calendar year. So, for example, if your birthdate is on January 1st, you’ll receive your benefit on the second Wednesday of January.
- If the payment day falls on a federal holiday, your benefit will be paid on the business day before the holiday.
- You can check your payment schedule online at the Social Security Administration (SSA) website.

Will there be extra Social Security payments?
Yes. There will be two SSI payments in May 2024. The June 2024 payment is scheduled to be distributed on June 1, but since June 1 falls on a weekend, it will actually be distributed on May 31. Accordingly, SSI beneficiaries will get two payments in May 2024 but none in June. Additionally, in August 2024 and November 2024, this pattern will manifest.

Will I get my Social Security check on the 3rd of October?
When do you get your social security check?
Claiming your Social Security payments is a retirement milestone. But not everyone receives their Social Security check on the same date. Benefits are paid out on Wednesdays, and those with a date of birth early in the month receive Social Security payments before those who were born later in the month.
When is my next Social Security payment?
To see your next payment date, create or log on to your my Social Security online account and go to the “Benefits & Payments” section. If you were born on the 1 st through the 10 th of the month, you’ll be paid on the second Wednesday of the month.
When will my Social Security benefits be sent out?
For most people that filed for Social Security on or after May 1, 1997, your benefit payments will be sent out on the second, third, or fourth Wednesday of each month, depending on your day of birth. If you filed for Social Security benefits before May 1, 1997, your payments will be sent out on the third of the next month.
When do SSI payments come?
Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payments occur on the first of each month. If you receive benefits based on someone else’s work record (spousal benefits, for example, or survivors benefits), your payment date is based on the primary beneficiary’s birthday instead of yours.
