Inside Erie Insurance’s Corporate Headquarters: A Photo Tour

Erie Insurance is a large regional property and casualty insurer serving over 5 million policies across 12 U.S. states and the District of Columbia. Founded in 1925 in Erie, Pennsylvania, the company’s corporate headquarters remains in its hometown.

Erie Insurance’s main campus spans over 20 acres and contains several notable buildings. Let’s take a photo tour of the insurer’s headquarters complex and learn about its history and architecture.

The Home Office Building

The central building of Erie’s corporate campus is the Home Office located at 100 Erie Insurance Place.

This 10-story, 193 foot tall office tower was constructed in 1968 in the international architectural style. It houses many of Erie’s executives and administrative functions.

Key features include:

• Black granite facade with tinted glass curtain walls
• Recessed windows with bronze mullions
• Flat roof with overhanging eaves
• Attached 4-story north wing addition

The building’s lobby and interiors showcase Erie’s history through archival photographs and artifacts.

The Erie Insurance Arena

Adjacent to the Home Office is the Erie Insurance Arena, home ice for the Erie Otters junior league hockey team.

The 6,833 seat arena was originally called the Louis J. Tullio Arena when it opened in 1983. Erie Insurance purchased the naming rights in 1996 and has maintained a presence ever since.

The arena hosts over 150 events every year, including hockey games, concerts, trade shows and more. It’s also home to the “Erie Express” food stand serving popular dishes from the company cafeteria.

The Ralph L. Bieber Memorial Building

On the west side of the Home Office lies the Ralph L. Bieber Memorial Building, opened in 1993.

This building is named after Erie Insurance’s former chairman and president. It houses claims processing, underwriting and accounting departments.

The 5-story office building has a similar exterior to the Home Office with its black granite facade and recessed windows. A glass walkway connects the Bieber building to the main tower.

The Jefferson J. Lewis Training Center

Erie Insurance emphasizes ongoing education for its workforce. The Jefferson J. Lewis Training Center supports this through its classrooms, conference rooms and auditorium spaces.

The two-story 33,000 square foot building opened in 1990 next to the Home Office. It provides versatile spaces for everything from new employee orientation to technology training sessions.

The company invests heavily in employee development, spending over $17 million per year on training initiatives.

The Scott E. Duncan Customer Experience Center

One of Erie Insurance’s newest buildings is the Scott E. Duncan Customer Experience Center, completed in 2014.

This modern 4-story building houses the company’s 24/7 call center. Customer service agents assist policyholders across all departments like claims, billing, policies and more.

The center’s open floor plan and amenity spaces create a comfortable work environment for call agents. There are also Energy Star rated systems incorporated for sustainability.

The Employee Fitness Center

Erie Insurance emphasizes health and wellness for its workforce. The on-campus employee fitness center provides a free gym with exercise equipment, classes and trainers.

The fitness center occupies two floors with cardio machines, weightlifting equipment, a basketball court, group fitness rooms and more. Employees can use the gym at no cost during the workday.

Various fitness incentives are offered such as reimbursements for race entries and exercise classes in the community.

The Walker Center

The Walker Center is one of the newer additions to Erie Insurance’s Home Office campus. Completed in 2020, this 6-story building provides modern workspaces.

It is connected to the Home Office by an enclosed pedestrian walkway. Natural lighting, sit-stand desks and collaborative work areas create an open work environment.

There is also a full service cafe, fitness room and nursing suite located in the building for employee convenience.

Downtown Erie Call Center Building

In addition to its main campus, Erie Insurance also has a downtown office at 1033 State Street in Erie. This 6-story historic building was constructed in 1926.

Erie Insurance purchased the property in 2011 for use as a customer service center. The restored building has an open, loft-style layout and rooftop patio.

Approximately 200 employees work in the downtown call center location, just a few blocks from the company’s founding office.

A History of Growth

Erie Insurance’s corporate campus has expanded immensely from its early days as a small regional insurer. The company now writes over $7 billion in premiums annually, though it still considers Erie, PA its home.
